David Bowles
Award-winning Chicano author and translator David Bowles is a native of South Texas, where he teaches in the Literatures and Cultural Studies department of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley as a professor of Latino literature and the Indigenous language Nahuatl. He presently serves as the president of the Texas Institute of Letters.
In addition to the thirty-six books he has published, David has launched an indie publishing
house (FlowerSong Press), provided cultural consulting services on dozens of projects for
producers and publishers, and worked extensively as an activist for his community. In 2019, he co-founded the hashtag and activist movement #DignidadLiteraria, which has negotiated greater Latino representation in publishing, notably getting powerhouse Macmillan to come to the table in February of 2020 and agree to terms. In 2021, he helped launch Chispa, the Latinx imprint of Scout Comics, for which he serves as co-publisher.
