What does it even mean to teach decoding? Increasing time spent on phonics instruction? Shifting focus to phonemic awareness? Using decodable texts—or is it better not to use them at all? In this session, Julia B. Lindsey will outline what the best of research and practice tell us about teaching foundational skills with the purpose of decoding, supporting application of decoding skills, and differentiating decoding instruction to meet the needs of all learners. Takeaways will include lesson plans and reproducibles—not to mention guidance on how to fit it all into a normal school day.
