Gwynne Ellen Ash is a professor of reading education at Texas State University. She earned her BA and MA in English Literature before teaching English language arts and reading (ELAR) at a Title I middle school in San Antonio, TX. She holds Texas certification in 4–8/6–12 ELAR, 4–8 Social Studies, and as a Reading Specialist (EC–12), with an ESL credential (EC–12). She earned her PhD in Reading Education at the University of Georgia, and for the past 24 years, she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in reading instructional methods and reading assessment, children’s/young adult literature, and a capstone for reading specialists. A former member of the ILA Board of Directors, Ash has been honored with awards for her service, research, and teaching, and considers being selected as the ILA 2024 Jerry Johns Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading to be the highlight of her career educating preservice and inservice teachers.
