Kelly Johnson is a faculty member in teacher education at San Diego State University and an instructional coach in the San Diego Unified School District. She teaches reading methods at the preservice level and courses in the master’s and doctoral programs. Johnson has published in The Reading Teacher, The California Reader, The Reading Professor, and Literacy. She has coauthored several books, including A Close Look at Close Reading: Teaching Students to Analyze Complex Text, K–5, Turning the Page on Complex Texts: Differentiated Scaffolds for Close Reading Instruction, and Dive Into Close Reading: Strategies for Your K–2 classroom. Johnson’s current focus is on assessment and small-group instruction in secondary classrooms. Prior to her current secondary and postsecondary positions, Johnson taught first through sixth grades and worked as a peer coach and a reading intervention teacher.
