Tiana Silvas (@tianasilvas) is a fifth-grade teacher at PS 59 in Manhattan and served as a Heinemann Fellow from 2016 to 2018. Previously, she taught upper elementary school and was a literacy coach in the South Bronx—work that helped lay the foundation of critical literacy and culturally responsive teaching that drives her practice. Her research focuses on the ways in which writing increases resiliency and agency in students who face trauma and/or adverse childhood experiences.
