Donna M. Scanlon is professor emeritus at the University at Albany. Her research has focused on children’s literacy learning difficulties and on how to prevent and remediate those difficulties, particularly in the primary grades. She codeveloped the Interactive Strategies Approach (ISA) to instruction and intervention, which has been found to be effective in helping teachers reduce the incidence of reading difficulties in the early primary grades. Her current research focuses on extending ISA for use with older struggling readers, as well as on evaluating the utility of providing teacher educators with ISA-based instructional resources with the goal of enhancing new and inservice teachers’ ability to understand and address the needs of beginning and struggling literacy learners.
